Avodart (Dutasteride) is a drug similar to Propecia (Finasteride), in that it blocks the enzyme that converts Testosterone to DHT. Unlike Finasteride, Avodart blocks both of the enzymes that create DHT instead of just one, so it may be a more potent treatment for hairloss. It is also, as far as we have been able to ascertain, the nearest new drug to FDA approval for hairloss.

What is Avodart?
Avodart (dutasteride) prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Avodart is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. It helps improve urinary flow and may also reduce your need for prostate surgery later on.
Avodart is sometimes given with another medication called tamsulosin (Flomax). Be sure to read the medication guide or patient instructions provided with each of your medications.
Avodart may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important information about Avodart
Avodart should never be taken by a woman or a child. Dutasteride can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle the capsules. Although Avodart is not for use by women, this medication can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy. Avodart capsules should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant.

Do not chew, crush, or open a Avodart capsule. Swallow the capsule whole. Dutasteride can irritate your lips, mouth, or throat if the capsule has been broken or opened before you swallow it. If a woman accidentally comes into contact with this medication from a leaking capsule, wash the area with soap and water right away.

Before taking Avodart, tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to dutasteride, or to a similar medicine called finasteride (Propecia, Proscar). Using Avodart may increase your risk of developing prostate cancer. Your doctor will perform tests to make sure you do not have other conditions that would prevent you from safely using Avodart.

How should I take Avodart?

General Avodart 0.5mg Dosage Information

Some considerations for people taking Avodart include:

Avodart should be taken at the same time each day.
If you do not take your Avodart as scheduled, take your next dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double the dose of Avodart.
Your Avodart dosage can be taken with or without food. If Avodart bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
Avodart should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed.
It may take as long as 3 to 12 months before your enlarged prostate symptoms improve.
Women who are or may be pregnant should not touch Avodart capsules (see Avodart and Pregnancy for more information).
For Avodart to work properly, you have to take it as prescribed. Avodart will not work if you take it in a way other than how your healthcare provider has prescribed.
If you are unsure about anything related to Avodart or your Avodart dosage, please talk with your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist. Do not stop taking Avodart without discussing it first with your healthcare provider.

What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What should I avoid while taking Avodart?

Avodart Side Effects: An Introduction
As with any medicine, there are possible side effects associated with the use of Avodart® (dutasteride). However, not everyone who takes this drug will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it well. When people do develop Avodart side effects, in most cases they are minor, meaning they require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Common Side Effects of Avodart
Avodart has been thoroughly studied in clinical trials, with many people having been evaluated. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking the drug were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in another group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.

Based on these studies, the most common Avodart side effects include:

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence -- up to 4.7 percent of people
A decreased libido (sex drive) -- up to 3 percent of people
Abnormal ejaculation, including decreased ejaculate amount -- up to 1.4 percent of people
Breast enlargement or breast tenderness -- up to 1.1 percent of people.

Risk for heart failure
A study involved 6,700 men with high scores from PSA blood tests but no sign of cancer on biopsy. The men were given Avodart or dummy pills and new biopsies four years later. Prostate cancer was found in 25 percent of those on dummy pills and 20 percent of those on Avodart. Heart failure developed in 30 men on the drug versus only 16 on dummy pills. Further analysis suggests that men who developed heart failure while on Avodart also tended to be taking certain other drugs. The New England of Medicine, 2010.

What other drugs will affect Avodart?

Avodart or Proscar? Which is better?
Avodart is a dual 5alpha-reductase inhibitor for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Avodart differs from finasteride as it inhibits both isoenzymes of 5alpha-reductase and results in near-complete suppression of serum dihydro-testosterone. Similar to finasteride, Avodart reduces serum prostatic specific antigen by approximately 50% at 6 months and total prostate volume by 25% in 2 years. Randomised, placebo-controlled trials conducted over 2 years have shown the efficacy of Avodart in symptomatic relief, and peak urinary flow rate, and reduction of acute urinary retention events and the need for surgery. The main Avodart side effects are erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, gynacomastia and ejaculation disorders. Avodart has been shown to possess tumor regression properties in vitro and its role in chemoprevention of prostate cancer is being evaluated in the ongoing Reduction by Dutasteride of Prostate Cancer Events (REDUCE) trial.
